Handwritten letter (partial) from Maj. Gen. S. Thomas, Office of the Provost Marshall General, Headquarters Dept. of the Cumberland, Chattanooga (Tenn.), concerning the confinement of Private Fitch. Fitch had been sentenced to three months of hard labor at a prison, with a ball and chain attached to his leg. Also included is Fitch's service record (copy, 1 p.).

Fitch enlisted in Company D, 21st Michigan Infantry on Aug. 8, 1862 at Ionia at age 23. He was mustered on Sept. 3, 1862. On June 8, 1865 he was mustered out at Washington, D.C.
